Happy RE-birthday?

I’m getting ready for my picnic-esque dinner, playing patriotic songs and crying……can our dear country regain her footing?
Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr wrote this additional verse for the “Star Spangled Banner” long before it became our national anthem:

“When our land is illumined with Liberty’s smile,
And a foe from within strikes a blow at her glory:
Down! Down with the traitors who dare to defile
The flag of her stars, and the page of our story!
By the billions unchained
Who our birthright have gained
We will keep her bright blazon forever unstained!
And the Star-Spangled Banner in triumph shall wave
While the land of the free is the home of the brave! “

[King George] has excited domestic insurrections amongst us, and has endeavoured to bring on the inhabitants of our frontiers, the merciless Indian Savages, whose known rule of warfare, is an undistinguished destruction of all ages, sexes and conditions.

Goodness, who knew about that verse? Thank you so much for that.

Yup there is a time for weeping, but not today. Your dinner: serve it forth, in a spirit of hope, gratitude, and proper pride in what our forbears have achieved. Inspire your friends with the spirit of hope? - yes, you must. Go with it! You’ll do fine.

Remember, it’s only treason if you lose.

“Treason doth never prosper. What’s the reason?
Why, if it prosper, none dare call it treason!”
