For what it’s worth… Today my son bought tickets, just a formality as they wanted to spread out the visitors, to Steamtown to see the behemoths side by side. Yes Two Big Boy Locomotives were in Scranton Pennsylvania, side by side. A reunion of sorts. ![IMG_0826](https://scanalyst.fourmilab.ch/uploads/default/original/3X/a/8/a8f779fcc6117e62bd07027e6ae203e258d456bb.jpeg) Here I am in front of the operating one. ![IMG_0827](https://scanalyst.fourmilab.ch/uploads/default/original/3X/9/9/9973179218d166bae952603ccec1d8b8ae5e98a2.jpeg) This is the front view of the two. ![IMG_0831](https://scanalyst.fourmilab.ch/uploads/default/original/3X/d/7/d743604a83e029fd99287dd64f0d1637261db756.jpeg) And here, the cab of the operating one and the front of the static display. The operating one had the fire going to keep it warm as it takes a week to cool it down and a lot of fuel to get it back up to operating temperature. We also did a short visit to other parts of [Steamtown](https://www.nps.gov/stea/index.htm). ( better picture there of both the Big Boys. ) Enjoy, Gerard ---

Grok: **Opening lines of the _Odyssey_** **Robert Fitzgerald (1961)** Sing in me, Muse, and through me tell the story of that man skilled in all ways of contending, the wanderer, harried for years on end, after he plundered the stronghold on the proud height of Troy. **Robert Fagles (1996)** Sing to me of the man, Muse, the man of twists and turns driven time and again off course, once he had plundered the hallowed heights of Troy. **Emily Wilson (2017)** Tell me about a complicated man. Muse, tell me how he wandered and was lost when he had wrecked the holy town of Troy… > Fitzgerald is the most expansive and lyrical. Fagles keeps a strong invocatory rhythm while expanding _polytropos_. Wilson is the most compressed and contemporary. Edit: I think it’s clear and obvious that Wilson’s translation is lazy and deceptive ---

> **Translation (faithful to the original Greek of Homer’s _Odyssey_ 1.1–9):** > > _Tell me, Muse, of the man of many turns, > who was driven far and wide after he had sacked > the sacred citadel of Troy. > Many were the cities of men he saw and whose minds he came to know, > and many were the pains he suffered in his heart upon the sea, > striving to win his own life and the homecoming of his companions. > Yet even so he could not save his companions, though he longed to: > for they perished through their own reckless folly— > fools, who ate the cattle of Helios Hyperion; > and he took from them the day of their return._ > > **“the man of many turns”** is a translation of the single Greek word **πολύτροπον** (_polýtropon_), the first adjective used to describe Odysseus in the _Odyssey_. > > ### Literal meaning > > - **πολύ-** (_poly-_) = “many” > - **τρόπος** (_tropos_) = “turn,” “way,” “manner,” “direction” > > So the word means, quite literally, “much-turned” or “of many turns.” > > ### Why the ambiguity is deliberate > > Homer chose a word that works on two levels at once: > > 1. **Geographical / narrative** Odysseus is the man who is constantly _turned aside_ — driven off course, forced to take detours, wandering through many places before he can reach home. > 2. **Character / psychological** He is the man of many _turns of mind_ — resourceful, adaptable, cunning, full of devices and strategies. He can shift tactics, invent stories, and reinvent himself as needed. > > This double meaning is one of the most famous pieces of wordplay in Greek literature. The poem opens by presenting Odysseus as both a physical wanderer _and_ a mental shape-shifter in the same breath. ![Screenshot 2026-07-28 at 12.37.24 PM](https://scanalyst.fourmilab.ch/uploads/default/original/3X/d/f/df037045aa87a41bcd11d91e1a5b2bbc06e7f030.png) ---

The Euroworms are squirming. Worthy of a bit of Schadenfreude. At €2.38 per liter, it’s still almost twice the price in the US. Maybe if the Euros want to lower fuel prices for their citizens, they could consider reducing taxes on fuel. Maybe get rid of Net Zero nonsense, too. Nah, just keep torturing your people. ---
