There’s 300,000 people living in Yakutsk Siberia. The engineer in me wants to know: how??

Yakutsk is located in a region with with large deposits of coal, gold, and diamonds. A large part of the economy is based on mining, and that provides the income for the imports needed by the population.

Murmansk, another city of around 300,000, is located even further north at 68° north latitude, 2 degrees north of the Arctic circle, and it looks about the same as any other city of that size. Its climate is milder than Yakutsk, since it is located on Kola Bay, adjacent to the Barents Sea. Here are some pictures of Murmansk from my visit in 2008.

Thanks John. I knew you’d be knowledgeable having been to both Poles.

I think houses “float” because of permafrost but I’m curious about heating and how socialization morphs due to limited movement (I assume).

I did note from the weather metar (airport icao id is UEEE) that winds are nil as they sit under a massive dome of “high pressure”

Thx again

Balmy today in Yakutsk: negative 20 degrees F.!

Those in North America north of the 30th parallel—keep warm!
