The inventor, Michael J. Freeman, received U.S. patent 4,078,316 for “Real time conversational toy” in March, 1978. The 75th anniversary issue of Playthings magazine, covering the toy and game industry, featured 2-XL on the cover and named it one of the top ten toys of all time.
