If you want to experience 2-XL for yourself, the 2-XL Bot site has an emulator that runs in your browser, complete with almost a hundred of the original programmes from both the original 8-track and later compact cassette version of the toy.
The inventor, Michael J. Freeman, received U.S. patent 4,078,316 for “Real time conversational toy” in March, 1978. The 75th anniversary issue of Playthings magazine, covering the toy and game industry, featured 2-XL on the cover and named it one of the top ten toys of all time.
