A Case Against Deportations

It seems so easy: an illegal immigrant has stolen money, so deport them. There are lots of examples [*]:

However, this isn’t good enough for the citizens of the country. The country needs to be made whole first. The money needs to be returned in double. In the absence of that, whoever took those funds, and their family - need to pay that debt off first.

This is the basis of the idea of ubuntu reconciliation - everyone should walk away from a situation like that feeling that there’s again justice. It treats everyone as adults, in contrast to the legal practice in the West that approaches criminals paternalistically using concepts like “reform” or “rehabilitation”, giving them a slap on the wrist and hoping they learn. We’ve seen that this doesn’t work: lying is too easy.

When reconciliation isn’t possible, the game-theoretic principle of deterrence comes into play: bad deeds simply can’t be allowed to pay off. Punishment and retribution aren’t an emotional matter, they are just mechanisms of deterrence.

Finally, far too often one criminal might “sacrifice” themselves but then pass the benefits to their family or their “tribe”. We’ve seen this in the Madoff case, and we’re seeing this with Minnesota. Reconciliation should be done at the group level as well. All Somalis in the US need to fix it, it’s not just on a few individuals, it’s on all of them to police their own group.

I was with this until this point:

Imagine this: You live in the US and you are likely a member of some loosely-defined groups (say, Poles, Mexicans, Orthodox Jews, etc.). You may not even be aware that some people may place you into one of these group. Some members of these groups commit crime. You do not even know them personally. One day, the victims or the state prosecutors knock on your door and hold you responsible.

  • Do you need to officially register as a member of such group to bear the responsibility?
  • In absence of such registration, who decides that you are a member of any of these groups?
  • If so, what are the advantages and right you gain with such registration?

This might have worked for Yermolov in 19th century Russia, but ulikely will work now in the US.

What do you think?

Thanks for thoughtfully exploring this idea, and you’re raising a good point.

Indeed, I don’t think that my proposal would be a feasible one-time rollout. It needs to be done gradually: groups need to start becoming accountable for the actions, and increase internal policing but also support.

I do think we need something that balances out the Western fixation on individualism - and account properly group-level initiatives along the lines of what Jack Parsons wrote about in The Social Contract - Book Review of "Human Population Competition" by Jack Parsons

Ever heard of the blond bad guy trope?

The movie industry has a habit of casting in a manner that is ethnically self-serving. It is ethnospecific memetic bio weaponry of mass destruction. The vast majority of the beneficiaries are not responsible for the deployment and did not participate except and the resulting feeding frenzy.

The phenomena can be observed in the mass sexual assaults of young women during Muslim riots in Germany. Unlike the casting authorities of Hollywood who may enjoy the sexual fruits directly, those creating the distractions are merely enjoying the fruits of violence.

The problem is with very word conspiracy. Mass organisms breathe together. They aren’t conscious of doing so.

Watch how slime molds behave in time lapse.
