I have not seen this news item widely reported: The journal Nature “… ranks research institutions based on their contributions to articles published in the world’s most influential scientific journals.”
8 of the current top 10 research institutions for physics are Chinese; 2 are European; 0 are American. The world has changed!
Of course, there is room for debate about whether the number of publications in “influential scientific journals” is a good measure of the contribution to the advance of human knowledge. But there is little room for debate about the high prevalence of Chinese & Indian names among the authors of papers published by US institutions. It seems the US is not getting much return for the huge amounts of money poured into Big Education.
“The top three US institutions – the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Harvard University and Stanford University – were ranked at 13th, 16th and 20th, respectively.”
If you haven’t noticed, journals such as Nature are totally debased. Yes, the world has changed: once reputable journals, universities, and other institutions are discredited.
The wonderful thing about this article is that it does not link the source, nor does it list any of these awesome contributions to human knowledge of physics. I wonder what those might be. A quick search of nature.com did not turn up this amazing bit of scholarship.
A quick look at Nature’s homepage will give the casual reader an idea of the woke infestation that has taken place. At this writing, there are no fewer than six Trump Derangement Syndrome articles. Sadly, Nature is no longer a scientific journal; it is a political opinion magazine. A once-great journal has fallen. Mourn the loss but don’t quote it.
As an aside, there is a crisis in physics but it has nothing to do with the US, Europe, or China. Sabine Hossenfelder has outlined the problems with much physics research but that is off topic.
Found the Nature article about how wonderful China is. Turns out that the survey uses self-reports by researchers instead of more objective measures such as journal impact or citations. Lie, damned lies, and statistics.
China leads in patents, education and State funding of innovation. Given they are the world’s factory, they will be capable of implementing more innovation in the physical space.
I don’t follow your argument. All the US scientific institutions suck, but China is not ahead?
