On 2022-03-04, near-Earth asteroid 138971 (2001 CB21) will fly by the Earth, coming as close as 4.9 million kilometres, or around 13 times the average distance of the Moon. Although this body is classified as a “potentially hazardous asteroid”, this encounter will not be remotely close. The asteroid is estimated to be between 560 metres and 1.2 km in diameter, which makes it larger than 97% of known asteroids.
The Virtual Telescope Project will be live-streaming the encounter, weather permitting, from a telescope near Rome. The live stream is scheduled to start at 03:00 UTC on 2022-03.04.
