Here is my January, 1994 article about the Fly’s Eye detection of a particle with an energy of 3.2\times 10^{20} electron volts, which gave the phenomenon the name now commonly used in popular discussions of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays, “The Oh-My-God Particle”.
