First of all, we must recognize the “Boomer” phenomenon as pivotal in not just western civilization but in the history of life. This last demographic gasp of technological civilization could have delivered technological civilization from the biosphere into a great diaspora of biospheres such as O’Neill Colonies.
Our sorely missed host here at Scanalyst recommended David Brin’s book The Transparent Society in the context of such eschatological matters:

Secondly, my boots-on-the-ground Launch Services Purchase Act of 1990 experience was contemporaneous with Elias’s book. It followed on my position as Local Support Team Leader for Space Studies Institute in Miami while Bezos was a student there – who then gave his valedictorian speech on O’Neill Colonies. It was as a result of this direct experience and passionate commitment that I came to the conclusion that the primary barrier to the space diaspora was rent-seeking in the public and private sectors and circulated a white paper in 1992. It proposed replacement of the 16th Amendment with a single tax on net assets and replacement of government with a citizen’s dividend:

This was in stark contrast with the vicious attacks I received from critics that were, to the man, Jewish. It was as a result of RGF that I met the late Randell J. Burns, descended from the Missouri family that was instrumental in opposing the Federal Reserve and probably resulted in there being two Federal Reserve banks in that polity to overcome their resistance: St. Louis and Kansas City.

Which brings me to David Brin’s “The Postman” and Brin’s likely connection to US government intelligence operations and the Anti-Defamation League.
“The Postman” is the only of Brin’s novels to be made into a major motion picture. When I saw it, years later, it struck me with horror – not because of its theme or content – but because it made a precisely engineered travesty of “Camp 38”. Who would do such a thing as to close off even retreat from the horrors visited upon a remnant of humanity escaping from Brin’s “Transparent Society”?
Who could finance such a virulent attack on a refuge for humanity?

The founding document of the real life “Camp 38” communities, to which some radical Boomers tried to escape what they saw as the implosion of technological civilization, was published decades before in 1951 by a WW II officer grappling with what he had done in the name of “freedom”.
