Departures

..that’s the title of Julian Barnes’ last book. No, I don’t mean just the latest, he says it’s the last one he’ll ever write.

“No don’t stop looking” he says to me the reader, on the final page.

I won’t! I love his oeuvre! Please discover him if you haven’t yet. You dear polymaths will love his writing.

I used to work for a travel agency and we would bribe luxury boutique hotels to partner with us by promising them ad placement in Departures magazine

When I saw the title of this thread, it reminded me of Departures magazine, yes I know this has nothing to do with Julian Barnes

I recently watched the film The Sense of an Ending, based on Julian Barnes’s book. It was reflective, interesting.

I can hear David Lynch saying “Beautiful.”

I took your advice & a half way through. Though he makes some poignant observations, I can’t say I’m captivated. I will finish and maybe say more. He is into how we’re destroying the planet.

Yes, I didn’t like that either. And what struck me about it is that, here’s a man supremely talented as a writer. He knows nothing about climate, I’d wager. N O T H I N G. His strength is literature, fiction. So why stick that in? Especially when he’s writing what he says is his last book. I find that when people know they’re dying they don’t give too much thought to the future of the planet, it just doesn’t concern them any more.
But I do like his reflections on maturity—kinda reminded me of some of YOUr pieces!
