One view of China’s extraordinary rapid technological progress is the commercial idea of the “Fast Follower”. Don’t waste resources on investing in cutting edge ideas, most of which will turn out to be disappointments. Instead, keep a careful watch on what other people are doing, and when you see a competitor coming up with a successful cutting edge idea, jump in with both feet.
The US demonstrated with the DC-X in the 1990s that reuseable rockets were technically feasible. But the Establishment ignored the potential, and focused resources instead on educating kids to put condoms on bananas. Then came a driven unreasonable person like Elon Musk.
Now China is jumping on Elon’s proven rocket – China with all the advantages of the world’s leading steel industry, world-leading manufacturing capabilities, highly trained work force, excellent educational system, lawyers & bureaucrats who know their place. SpaceX will face some very tough competition in the years ahead.
Look what has happened to Tesla. Once Musk demonstrated the technology, a Chinese company that hardly anyone in the West knew existed jumped in, and now BYD is building better cheaper electric cars than Tesla.
But China suffers from its own limitations. If they were truly intelligent, they would long ago have offered Musk Chinese citizenship and all the funding he could dream of to set up shop there. Throw in some pretty Chinese ladies too, since Musk seems to have a weakness for the fairer sex.
I’ve had some interactions with Maosts regarding panspermia. Their self-perception is that of the Middle Kingdom. So they are happy to let a frontier culture take the arrows in the back while they harvest. In this respect they may have more self-awareness than you give them credit for. To some extent this reflects the Jewish view but without Israel as a center I think it is safe to say the Chinese are more intelligent in this respect.
Where both Chinese and Jewish culture fail ultimately is their inability to recognize that they are not as good at human husbandry as they believe. This conceit is the downfall of all cultures that overvalue civilization for its own sake. Ultimately the downfall takes the form of an Apex predator restraining their over grazing the ecosystem including creative human ecologies.
China’s history says that the Han people have been under the direct rule or indirect control of non-Chinese people for centuries – Mongols, Jurchen, Japanese, Europeans. But such Apex predators are thin on the ground these days.
Chinese people ruling China is, in a sense, the historical oddity. We shall have to see what the consequences will be.
