Hope Springs Eternal

Let’s all hope so.

“Hope springs eternal in the human breast:
Man never IS, but always TO BE, blest.”

It’s another example of the principle that any idea, carried out to its extreme, morphs into its own exact opposite.

A few weeks ago I had an epiphany about “conservatism”. It’s not that we want to prevent all “progress”; it’s that, when a good idea reaches the summit of its development, we want it to stay there, instead of slipping down the other side of the mountain into self-parody. And tyranny.

Conservation is what scientists do when they keep experimental control groups isolated from the experimental treatments. Conservatives may differ in what an optimum is for development but at least we generally respect our own limitations enough to respect such differing individuals in a material way. What matters to the true conservative is that differing-others not externalize the costs by insisting that we admit them to our environments after they have trashed theirs.
