Inside Japan's E-Defense Earthquake Simulator

The E-Defense facility shake table has a moving platform 20 by 15 metres in size with load capacity of 12,000 kilonewtons. It can reproduce ground movement in all three axes (roll, pitch, and yaw) with displacements of ±1 metre in X and Y axes and ±0.5 metre in Z. Accelerations of 9 m/sec² horizontally and 15 m/sec² are possible with maximum load, and motion with frequencies up to 15 Hz can be simulated with precision and up to 30 Hz with less accuracy.

It is possible to “replay” measured ground movement from actual earthquakes to study response of full size structures to seismic loads.
