Johnston Atoll has been, over the years, a naval refuelling station, airbase, launch site for nuclear tests in space, satellite tracking observatory, chemical weapons testing base, secret anti-satellite missile launch site, LORAN navigation station, and disposal facility for chemical weapons and defoliants. It is now abandoned to the seabirds.
