Joseph Bazalgette, the Great Stink, and the Sewers of London

Here is more on the Great Stink of 1858 and Joseph Bazalgette’s rôle in designing and building the London sewer system. The original sewer system did not treat the sewage, but routed it downstream where it was dumped into the Thames at high tide where it would be carried out to sea.

Oh I read a novel called The Great Stink years ago. SUCH a great story!
Next, I recommend Miller’s “Pure”, about moving Les Innocents cemetery outta central Paris…

There are two books with that title. The novel, The Great Stink, by Clare Clark, published in 2006, is a murder mystery set in the transformation of the London sewer system. A completely unrelated picture book for children is The Great Stink: How Joseph Bazalgette Solved London’s Poop Pollution Problem by Colleen Paeff and Nancy Carpenter, published in 2021.
