Since the data packet format transmitted by Token Ring and Ethernet was identical, as Ethernet began to pull away in the market due to its lower cost and higher speed (plus being built-in on more and more computers), it was relatively easy for customers to migrate their token ring networks to Ethernet, using bridge appliances to connect old and new portions of their networks.
