At the conclusion of the Intel Innovation conference on October 27–28, 2021, Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger answered questions from journalists and industry analysts. Gelsinger was candid about how Intel has lacked transparency and engagement with developers and vowed to return Intel to its nerdy roots—he called the just-concluded conference “a great day for geeks”.
Particularly interesting were Intel’s plans to license its x86 processor cores to third parties, at least those who use Intel’s foundries to fabricate their chips. It seems Intel perceives it has been losing out in the embedded core market to alternatives such as RISC-V and ARM, both of which make their cores available to third party developers.
