Their launch facility is nestled in a small coastal canyon,

The system is four-stages with the first three solid fuel.

Such staging is also present in Japan’s larger Epsilon.

That gives Japan two good candidates for an MRBM/ICBM.

For unspecified reasons, the flight was intentionally terminated. Thus, the explosion emanated from the middle of the solid rocket stack.
