The Crazy Years

I don’t know why everyone is upset. I like Hamas especially on a warm pita. But that Hummas? That is one evil group.

Lego is scrapping plans to make its toy bricks from recycled plastic bottles after determining that switching to the material would result in it producing higher carbon emissions.

Its latest effort was focused on recycled plastic bottles. The company found a one-liter plastic PET bottle could produce around 10 of its classic 2×4-stud bricks. The company has been testing bricks made from the material for their quality, durability and “clutch power”—the name Lego gives to the brick’s ability to lock together with other bricks.

Lego said it is abandoning the effort because it found that scaling up production wouldn’t cut the company’s carbon emissions: The extra steps involved in production would use more energy and manufacturing facilities would require retooling.

Most Lego pieces are currently made from acrylonitrile butadiene styrene plastic. The company has also been using a bioplastic made from sugar cane for several years to produce smaller, softer pieces such as trees, branches, leaves and accessories for its minifigures. This bioplastic, known as bio-PE, isn’t currently suitable for making harder, stronger elements such as its bricks though.

Because ACT has an oddly limited pool of takers, lots of things can explain variation.

I don’t follow you. What is the oddly limited pool?
Over a million take the ACT.

Historically, there were very substantial biases in who took the ACT vs. the SAT based on geography and target college. That affected the pool.

ACT use has exploded relative to SAT perhaps due to regional shifts and perhaps as people try to game the system by taking the ACT rather than the SAT. This caused changes in the pool.

Henry Kissinger: maybe it was a bad idea for Germany to allow mass third world immigration. Now, do the U.S. southern border.

Hamas’ attack against Israel being celebrated on the streets of Berlin indicates that Germany has let too many foreigners into the country, according to former U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger.

“It was a grave mistake to let in so many people of totally different culture and religion and concepts, because it creates a pressure group inside each country that does that,” the 100-year-old ex-top American diplomat said in an interview with Axel Springer CEO Mathias Döpfner for Germany’s Welt TV. Axel Springer is POLITICO’s parent company.

Meanwhile, soi-disant libertarian Richard Epstein goes on the warpath.

This chart was put together by 𝕏 user Crémieux from the U.S. 2023 Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) data, converting SAT score to IQ (mean 100, standard deviation [SD] 15).

In the full thread, he discusses the fact that taking the SAT is selective, and presents data and charts for the state of Michigan, where 97% of high school graduates take the SAT. The results, scaled to IQ, are:

All U.S. SAT takers

Asians scored 112.92, Blacks scored 90.93, Hispanics scored 93.85, and Whites scored 104.01, with SDs of 14.46, 12.77, 13.17, and 12.54.

Michigan SAT takers

Asians had a score of 111.60, Blacks scored 87.75, Hispanics scored 94.35, and Whites scored 102.43, with SDs of 19.675, 12.71, 14.12, and 13.94.

Here are the raw data from the College Board, “SAT Suite Annual Report 2023”.

Led Zeppelin’s first album (1969) was released closer to the start of World War I (1914) than to today (2023).

The same goes for the first human landing on the Moon.

Good Times Bad Times

Just an idle thought prompted by the above. Progress seemed to grind to a halt round about 1970 – whether talking about rock music, moon landings, or much else. What happened to interrupt human advance? Well, round about the same time, the pogrom against smoking began.

Correlation is not causation, but it does make one wonder … Maybe smoking stimulates human creativity and competence? Was there a link between the spread of smoking and the Industrial Revolution? Coud we make the world a better place by encouraging (een subsidizing) smoking?
