I just got a letter today from the electric utility that supplies Fourmilab announcing their increase in charges for 2024. This is a custom calculation for each customer on the assumption that their energy use for 2024 is identical to 2023 and includes charges for energy, local and national grids, a federal tax to subsidise “renewable” energy, and a new federal tax of CHF 0.012 per kWh to support a scheme to subsidise reserve power generation facilities for shortfalls in the winter. The bottom line? Here 'tis—“ct” is CHF 0.01.

Year Price
2023 27.02 ct/kWh
2024 34.74 ct/kWh
Increase 28.6%

Now, what’s the official inflation rate for Switzerland? Well, here it is for 1960 through 2023 according to the OECD.

But that’s a “core” inflation rate that excludes food and energy, because as is well known, nobody in Switzerland ever eats or uses energy.

“a biological male who identifies as a black lesbian”. Is that the new name for a guy that is attracted to women but likes wearing women’s clothes?

In Michigan it’s a hate crime to use the wrong pronouns but I can’t keep track of them

Here is the document they’re signing, “Sociologists in Solidarity with Gaza and the Palestinian People”. There are 1920 signatories so far. Recently, for some incomprehensible reason, they disabled the ”Click to sign” link and replaced it with this.

The planned walkout marks the first full-day women’s strike since 1975.

Women and non-binary people have been urged to refuse paid and unpaid work on Tuesday, including household chores.

Some preschools and primary schools are closed, while some others that remain open are offering reduced services. Some museums, city libraries and zoos are also affected.

How many zoos are in Iceland?

Cheating at German driving tests [source]:

The number of attempted deceptions discovered during theoretical driving license tests has reached a record level. Almost half of all examinees fail the test - the TÜV calls for “better traffic education”.

More than 2,700 people tried to cheat on the theory driving test in the first nine months of this year and were caught. The number is higher than ever before and an increase of 38 percent compared to the same period last year, as the TÜV testing organizations’ advocacy group, the TÜV Association, announced.

According to the TÜV Association, in dozens of cases the inspectors were verbally attacked by those caught, and in 20 cases physical violence was threatened.

The analysis:

From the testing organizations’ point of view, a central reason for the high failure rate is “the increasingly complex and dense road traffic with more and more vehicles and the resulting consequences,” it said. “If we want to reverse the trend, we need better traffic education in schools and at home and further strengthening of driver training.”

Unsinn!

The “complex and dense road traffic” should affect the practical part of the test rather than the theoretical.

What fraction of test takers are immigrants?

Here is the Autodesk Portland back-to-the-office video.

This dates from 2022-04-09, and was posted on the “Autodesk Life” YouTube channel which appears to be an official Autodesk site. Take a look at their Videos page and see if you notice anything.
