While what you write is correct, however Pournelle and Possony were apparently working on describing a much larger historical scope. It seems like there are few to no cases on record where a long term recovery happened. The long decline of the Roman Empire was only slowed by geniuses like Diocletian, not stopped. If Trump had done those (desirable) things they would have been put back in one form or another within 20 years, if not by the end of the next terms of his opposition.
A true solution will have to be deeper than that.

Indeed. Many of us thought that having observed the difference between the 1970s and the 1980s which was achieved mostly by ceasing to do stupid things, that would have been settled for some time. But nothing stays settled across the time span of a generation, especially when the institutions that raise the subsequent generations do not transmit the experience of the past but do pass on well-intentioned and fine sounding dumb ideas that have been tried again and again with the same dismaying results.

I love a good antitrust case. This has me wondering if the Court will reconsider their grant to MLB as a non-public utility monopoly. That is the only sport with such a grant from the Court and I wonder if this will make them take another look.
