In Pittsburgh, we have never had this problem. It has long been customary to address groups as “YINZ” (= you ones). Since the state of uninterrupted, self-righteous indignation has become the official state religion of the US, it seems likely someone will demand it be changed to YINX.

Note that even in countries which had no equivalent of the GI Bill, after World War II there was a vast expansion of the “higher education” racket and promotion of the “everybody should go to college” policy goal in many of them, for example the “plate glass universities” in the United Kingdom, which accelerated further with the “post-1992 universities” springing up like mushrooms.

Similarly to the UK trend, the past 50 years have seen many US colleges rebranded as universities. Traditionally, many states had separate “University of ___” and state college systems. Many of the latter have been rebranded. It seems their main doctoral degree programs are education and other soft subjects.
