Austria never stopped being an espionage hub, as far as I can tell.
@jdougan You piqued my interest in Vienna and Austria
Vienna population is almost 2 million.
Austria joined EU in 1995.
At the beginning of 2023, 34.2% of Vienna’s residents were foreign nationals, 39.3% were born abroad, and 44.4% were of foreign origin (either holding foreign citizenship or being Austrian nationals born abroad)
14.8% Muslim but 30% of school children in Vienna
The majority of Muslims in Austria have Turkish or Bosniak backgrounds. Other significant groups include Arabs, Afghans, Kurds, Chechens, Pakistanis, and Iranians
While Austria and Vienna have relatively low crime rates overall, the demographics of criminals show a higher proportion of foreign-born individuals involved in certain types of offenses.

Austria, particularly Vienna, has become a major hub for Russian espionage operations in Europe. The number of Russian diplomats and support staff in Austria has increased significantly in recent years, with over 500 now based in Vienna, of which Austrian intelligence estimates up to half are spies[1][2].
Vienna serves as a base for Russian clandestine operations, including financing and logistical support for assassinations, sabotage, recruitment, industrial espionage and influence campaigns across Europe[2]. Russian operatives in Austria have been suspected of involvement in high-profile incidents like the murder of a Russian defector in Spain[1][2].
Austria’s neutral status, strategic location near the former Iron Curtain, and spy-friendly laws have made it an attractive espionage hub since the Cold War[3][4]. Spying is legal in Austria as long as it doesn’t target the country itself[4]. This has attracted intelligence services from many nations, with Austrian officials estimating there are “hundreds” of foreign spies active in the country[3].
However, recent scandals involving Russian espionage have prompted some calls to tighten Austria’s spy laws[5]. The Austrian government is considering closing a legal loophole that has turned Vienna into a haven for foreign intelligence agencies[5].

YUG is Yugoslav?
Is it BH? Bosnia Herzegovina?
YUG is Yugoslavia, which typically includes Serbia (Orthodox) and Kosovo (Muslim). It may also include Montenegro and Northern Macedonia that don’t seem to be listed. BIH is Bosnia and Herzegovina, which is Muslim-Orthodox-Catholic.
All these countries were part of Austria Hungary except Serb?
Why was Ferdinand in Sarajevo in 1914? To add a third capital and monarchy? Austria Hungary Croatia?
Very observant of you - the Ottoman part of former Yugoslavia is culturally poorer and tends to be subtracting from the economy versus adding to it. Very few descendants of the Habsburg subjects would have referred to themselves as Yugoslavian.
Meh. “Gun violence” and “Firearms murders”. How about the stats for all murders.
They note grenade murders are big thing.
