From Eadweard Muybridge to Harold Edgerton, photography with very short exposure times has allowed seeing the invisible, from settling bets about horses’ feet at a gallop to understanding the mechanics of a nuclear detonation. Now, super-fast photography even permits observing the propagation of pulses of light from femtosecond lasers.
