California’s insurer of last resort runs out of money to pay L.A. fire claims
In the aftermath of the fires, the FAIR plan will get a $1 billion bailout — the latest indication that California’s home insurance market is on shaky footing.
The decision to grant the plan’s request for a cash infusion comes in the aftermath of two of the most destructive fires in the state’s history, which destroyed roughly 6,800 structures in the Pacific Palisades neighborhood and about 9,400 in the suburb of Altadena last month. Since then, the FAIR plan has been inundated with claims for damage by homeowners who lost everything — and who had not been able to get coverage on the private market. To date, the plan has paid out $914 million to policyholders, a figure that is expected to grow.
… State Farm, the largest insurance company in California, has fled wildfire-prone areas. Last year, it did not renew nearly 70 percent of policies in the Palisades Zip code, leaving residents increasingly reliant on the FAIR plan.

Reminds me of when I lived in Boston and, seems like every year, the city government would run out of money for snow removal sometime in February. These government guys are always good for some laughs.

Faced with a deluge of litigation from the Palisades fire, the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power approved a three-year, $10-million contract with a top law firm to defend the utility.
The Board of Water and Power, which is made up of mayoral appointees, voted Tuesday to retain the L.A. firm Munger, Tolles & Olson to investigate anticipated claims related to the fire and respond to lawsuits from residents whose homes were destroyed or damaged.
Although the firm is to be paid by DWP, it was selected by L.A. City Atty. Hydee Feldstein Soto.
Under the deal, partners at the firm will charge the utility up to $1,975 per hour for their legal work. Associates will bill from $745 to $1,180 per hour. A spokesperson for Feldstein Soto said this “discounted rate structure” was among the factors that led to the selection of the firm.
At $1975/hour - and the glacial pace of the legal “system” - it might be cheaper to just pay to rebuild the whole thing.
Since the legal “system” consists of nothing but tens of thousands of black letter laws (words), innumerable regulations (words), and an ocean of cases (words), perhaps some enterprising Chinese programmer will train an Artificial Intelligence on that near infinity of characters. Then sell a copy of the AI to each affected resident for $19.95 to let them represent themselves in court, outwitting & outlawyering those overpaid Democrats … I mean “partners”.
I suspect if all these words, with leftist revisions included, the AI’s result would be” TILT”! Or some infinite recursion. Or “the end is near”.
The reason that couldn’t work within the current system is that there are Byzantine rules in court that most people don’t know. It’s not enough to know the letter of the law and regulations. As Scanalyst’s resident lawyers can confirm, there is a plethora of rules about evidence and procedure. Rightly or wrongly, the deck is stacked against pro se litigants. It’s even said that a lawyer who represents himself has a fool for a client.
For jury selection the plaintiffs should ask: what is your opinion of LADWP? what is your opinion of Karen Bass? what is your opinion of Rick Caruso? did your home burn down?
