The Gotthard Base Tunnel, completed in 2016, is the longest (57 km) and deepest (2.45 km) railway tunnel in the world. It connects the Swiss cantons of Uri and Ticino, and provides a level route directly through the Alpha allowing trains to operate up to 230 km/hour. Total cost for the project is estimated at CHF 9.56 billion.
