The English Channel Tunnel opened in 1994 (freight service in June, passengers in November). It is 50.46 km long, with three tubes (two for track, one service and emergency escape tunnel). Trains operate at up to 160 km/hour, and in 2017 the tunnel carried 10.3 million passengers and 1.22 million tonnes of freight.
