The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe, which gained global notoriety in 2008 for printing one-hundred-trillion-dollar notes, said Friday it was launching a new national currency, promising, once again, to end years of monetary turbulence.
To shore up confidence in the currency, Mushayavanhu said it would be fully backed by Zimbabwe’s reserves of U.S. dollars and precious metals, particularly gold. He also pledged to end a long-running practice of the bank issuing more money to finance government spending.
Zimbabwe abolished the Zimbabwe dollar in 2009, after a bout of hyperinflation that, by some estimates, saw prices rise by 500 billion percent. For nearly a decade, the country then operated on U.S. dollars and other foreign currencies. When the central bank was no longer able to pay out savings in cash dollars, it reintroduced the Zimbabwe dollar in 2019.
Tino Kapesa, a 23-year-old college student, said he has little trust that the ZiG will fare better than its predecessors. “I smell a rat here. What is the wisdom of introducing a new currency when many of us do not trust government policies?” he said. “They will surely print more money before long.”
A few interesting points off the topic of insurance.
In the literature I have read on the debate on whether solar is even a net positive on energy return on energy. The argument from those that say it is positive use a lifespan of over 20 years. They also exclude installation, insurance, maintenance, etc.
- 10 year life span in Florida.
- $50K solar projects.
Before Bidenflation, at the time I was reading the literature, I priced out solar, it was $25K for 20KW of solar with battery storage. This would not be a roof install, but on a separate frame and I planned on doing the installation.
Bidenflation is climate change negative!! Of course the greenies don’t get economics. They don’t get that if you need 10 people to harvest enough food to feed 8 that there might be a problem. Economics is just a construct of the cis white privileged.
If there were any sanity in government (yeah, yeah, I know), solar installations would cause your electric utility to unplug you. If your solar install can’t handle your needs 24/7/365, then it is an expensive burden to the grid, not any benefit. Your neighbors should not suffer a destabilized grid on your behalf.
Perhaps this time they will consider using the scientific notation for the denomination?
Just saying …
That setup - depending on where the property is located - might work well with an EV used for short city commutes.
Sorry, I missed your reply until now.
certain other positions NOT usually considered “power” positions.
No argument. I didn’t define power positions. The list can be very large.
Direct power takes actions and influential power is the power to influence direct power.
Rothbard and Mises are influential in many Libertarian economic views. We know this because the ones influenced by Mises or Rothbard will state it. Milei states that they influenced him and now he is using direct power to implement policy based at least in part on those influencers.
George Soros takes actions with regard to law enforcement and he influences, but he is not directly responsible. He has influential power. Of course, people may be beholden to him, but I think you know what I mean.
If your going to propose that some political philosophy that holds no direct power was the reason those that did hold direct power took some action, then you need to trace the Democrats and or Republicans being influenced by someone that doesn’t have direct power.
Because something looks like an idea someone proposed doesn’t mean that person was influential. In 1980, I thought the limit for Pheasants should be increased. It was later increased. I guarantee that I did not have any influence what so ever. For someone to run around with an audio recording of me saying it should be increased and using that as evidence that the limit had been changed due to me is pretty weak. Thus, you not only have to show the someone proposed an idea, you have to show they actually had influence. The average successful Youtuber probably has more followers and more influence then a Libertarian writing articles.
Which politicians that have direct power indicate they were influenced by the Libertarian idea of open borders? It better be someone from the 1970’s or earlier because when I was a child there were already “open borders”.
Most times in politics the explanation is really straight forward and has nothing to do with intellectual philosophy. It has to do with getting elected.
Immigration was supported by business because they needed labor. Farmers needed people to hoe the beats, harvest the crop, etc. Business as a group have influence on politicians. Cumulative, since 1998 the US Chamber of Commerce has spent the most money on lobbying. I believe they are and have been big supporters of immigration.
The Democrats learned it was to their political advantage. Neither parties position was based on some grand philosophical reason. They did it out of pragmatism. They still do. Few, if any, will even have “open borders” as a platform.
I would bet the farmers in California had more influence on illegal immigration than any Libertarian philosopher. Which is more likely, the California farmers influenced Regan’s support of amnesty or the Libertarians?
This is so true especially in the world of bitcoin. Rothbard was a mediocre economist. To paraphrase Friedman they were too abstract and dogmatic
Libertarians had zero influence on Reagan or in California.
Regarding farmers, Cesar Chavez vehemently and violently opposed illegal immigrants or wet backs. On the other hand he was more of a labor union organizer and represented employees, not people who owned farms.
Is this “concern” stopping anyone from offering goods for incredible shrinking dollars? Or from buying increasingly-suspect US debt?
