The Crazy Years

France’s nuclear regulator has ordered ITER, an international fusion energy project, to hold off on assembling its gigantic reactor until officials address safety concerns. This month, the ITER Organization was expecting to get the green light to begin to weld together the 11-meter-tall steel sections that make up the doughnut-shaped reactor, called a tokamak. But on 25 January, France’s Nuclear Safety Authority (ASN) sent a letter ordering a stoppage until ITER can address concerns about neutron radiation, slight distortions in the steel sections, and loads on the concrete slab holding up the reactor. ITER staff say they intend to satisfy ASN by April so they can begin to weld the reactor vessel by July. “We’re working very hard for that,” says ITER Director-General Bernard Bigot.

Sad thing is that most of the Far Left Greenies running our world who reject nuclear fission have no idea that fusion also produces radiation and sub-atomic particle like neutrons. But most of them probably have no idea what a neutron is, or what the term “activation” means. It is as if the captain of our ship of state is blind, deaf, and facing in the wrong direction.

ITER’s Director-General’s last name is Bigot?

Is the simulation glitching again?

Absolutely nothing nefarious going on there. I am sure there is a pallet of opium in the NY Harbor and New York is pleased with the injection from Afghanistan.

?Why is it that “speeding, citations” are markers of bad drivers. Certainly most “speed limits” are arbitrary and capricious, with no science to defend their value, while “speeding” is simply often moving about the country as one wishes. Yes, there are both people AND vehicles that can’t sustain high speeds, but the gene pool is usually cleared of them reasonably quickly.

Citations are merely a revenue-producing scheme. Look at how NYC reacted to the cops deciding not to write citations.

Driving a vehicle rapidly is a skill-set. The vehicles that can go rapidly safely are also available, but usually in more limited numbers. I would be far more afraid of driving a Silverado or F-150 at 100 MPH than a Corvette at 140 MPH.

Switzerland will BAN electric cars from roads during power shortages

To clarify, this is a proposal, issued on 2022-11-23, for measures to be taken by the Federal Council (executive branch of the Confederation government) in case of electricity shortages. It was issued for consultation by the cantons and business representatives for a period through 2022-12-12. Now that the consultation has concluded, a final draft will be prepared; this has not yet been released. Here is an article from Swissinfo when the draft was released, “Government moots backup plans in case of electricity shortages”.

Here is the draft plan, in French, “Ordonnance sur les restrictions et les interdictions d’utilisation de l’énergie électrique” [PDF, 10 pages]. The restriction on use of electric vehicles appears on page 7 under «Palier» (Stage) 3,

The private use of electric cars is only permitted for absolutely necessary journeys (for the exercise of a profession, for shopping and for traveling to the doctor, to religious events or to court hearings, eg).

Level 3 is the highest level of restriction in the plan. In addition, there is a Level 4 which outright bans a variety of items such as projection of films, cultural events, and sporting matches which consume electricity.

The bullshit asymmetry: the amount of energy needed to refute bullshit is an order of magnitude bigger than to produce it.

Is this a parody or a troll? Well, check out the Web site, CollectTrumpCards.com, which was registered on 2022-07-26 and whose ownership is hidden behind a cut-out called “PERFECT PRIVACY, LLC” in Jacksonville, Florida.

There we learn:

Each Digital Trading Card (NFT) is not only a rare collectible, it automatically enters YOU INTO A SWEEPSTAKES for a chance to win 1000’s of incredible prizes and meet the one and only #45! There’s no purchase necessary to enter!

For your US$ 99, you don’t even get a card, but an NFT. We also learn that they believe the apostrophe is used to form plurals of numbers in the English language.

The intellectual property statement on the Web site is interesting:

NFT INT LLC is not owned, managed or controlled by Donald J. Trump, The Trump Organization, CIC Digital LLC or any of their respective principals or affiliates. NFT INT LLC uses Donald J. Trump’s name, likeness and image under paid license from CIC Digital LLC, which license may be terminated or revoked according to its terms.

This purports to be a video from the former president promoting these “cards”. It is featured on the site selling them, but in the age of deep fakes one never knows. I have linked to a grab of the video on YouTube because the video posted on the card peddling site cannot be embedded.

The purpose: to prevent the boats from hitting an endangered right whale.

In an email to Fox News, an NOAA spokesman pointed out there are only 350 right whales left in the ocean.

“This rule is designed to reduce the risk of mortalities from vessel strikes and afford the species a greater opportunity to recover,” the statement read.

The statement admitted, however, there have only been five deadly whale strikes by boats between 35 to 65 feet in length over the last 15 years. (Boats over 65 feet are already subject to a speed restriction.)

“It’s ridiculous,” added Angers, who pointed out there’s less than a one in a million chance of a fishing boat hitting a whale, according to NOAA’s own numbers.
