“Excellence should always stay the main principle… but at the same time, [quotas are] a necessary step,” she says.

Innovation! Regulation innovation. Such quotas are an insult for smart women (or smart men, depending on what side of regulations you are).

Now the solar system is shooting back.

Asteroid 2023 CX₁, discovered on 2023-02-12 at 20:18 UTC by Krisztián Sárneczky in Hungary, was less than 233,000 km from Earth, already inside the orbit of the Moon, when first spotted. Further observations from the Višnjan Observatory at Tičan, Croatia refined its orbital elements and confirmed it was on an impact trajectory with the Earth. This was only the seventh Earth impactor to be observed prior to hitting the Earth.

At 02:59:16 UTC on 2023-02-13, the rock, estimated to have a mean diameter around one metre, entered the Earth’s atmosphere at an inclination between 40° and 50° to the vertical, travelling eastward along the English Channel over the coast of Normandy, France. Atmospheric heating disrupted the object, resulting in an airburst which observers described as momentarily as bright as the Sun. Nothing is expected to have reached the ground.

This was the second Earth impactor to be discovered by Krisztián Sárneczky, the first being 2022 EB₅ in March 2022.

Missed this earlier. Assault appliances are a problem in Russia. We met a man at a dinner in Azerbaijan about 10 years ago. He was working there, but had left his wife and kids in Moscow, and his wife had recently been electrocuted by a shower head electric hot water heater. We heard the details second hand, he didn’t speak any English and (not surprisingly) was well into a bottle of vodka when we got there.

It was a problem long before Trump. In the early 90s while working on a project in the Hoover building I couldn’t make it back and flew my oldest out for her 8th birthday. They gave her a private full VIP tour of the building, including the FBI gift shop where she wanted a T shirt (dad paid for it, not a kickback). She was warned multiple times to never wear it in DC, wearing anything labeled FBI meant you might be target practice.

On the same tour they handed her a Thompson submachine gun, with a drum cartridge, as part of the gun range tour while making sure I knew it was unloaded and disabled. Told them no problem, she was a good shot and familiar with firearm safety. Could have been a help while wearing the T shirt, although it was a bit much for an 8 year old. Still have the photo hanging over my home office desk

Good thing it wasn’t flying over the US or there would have been an F-22 chasing it

Left-wing activist baker who believes in abolishing police dies after robbers mowed her down at bank in Oakland - victim’s family say killers shouldn’t go to jail as murders soar 50%

  • Anarchist baker’s family and friends want ‘alternatives’ to prison for her killers
  • Police are investigating case as a homicide, no arrests have been made

Hanlon’s Razor is dead. These people are not innumerate. They deliberately exploit innumeracy:

For example, female founder teams raised only 1.1% of funding raised by European startups in 2021. In the same year, teams made up solely of ethnic minority founders raised $1.8bn — compared with $103.9bn raised by all-white founding teams.

Note the bias created by “solely” and “all”. Almost by definition, a minority population would be expected to produce few all-minority entities. How many all-redhead startups are there?

I was being sarcastic.

You should be raising money for VC investment in all-minority entities, and then focus on all-blonde or all-redhead startups (a global minority of 3-4% of population). Anticipate controversy and ride the wave.

Tesla NY unionization:

The employees involved in the campaign are in charge of labeling data for Tesla’s Autopilot technology at the company’s Buffalo, New York facility. Bloomberg says the group is asking for better pay, job security and a better work environment that eases the production pressures placed on them.

Workers told the news organization that they’ve been skipping bathroom breaks, since Tesla keeps a close eye on their every move. Apparently, the company monitors their keystrokes to see how long they spend on each particular task and how much time they spend working per day. They also said that the company shut down an internal chatroom where they can air their grievances, such as the how Tesla handles snow days. It was after that happened that the group started talking about unionizing. They’re now planning to distribute Valentine-themed materials at the facility with links to a website where employees can sign union cards.

Tesla will subcontract this task out.

At Tesla’s AI Day in September 2022, they said that automatic labeling of video was a priority and already progressing. GPUs do not (at least so far) unionise.
