It doesn’t seem surprising. I’m not sure about all that working in ATC entails but piloting an aircraft requires a variety of cognitive skills. Pilots often have scientific or engineering training, which means they would overlap with the occupations near the top of that list.
I would guess that IQ-by-profession ranking is an assessment of English punters. “Solicitors”? I guess that means lower-status lawyers, rather than Ladies of the Night. But if the data really did come from a survey in England, I could be wrong.
Still, we should always ask the key question – Just where did the data come from?

I would be of the opinion that both ATC and pilots are there because of better spatial understanding. Both realms deal with objects in 3D, not a natural thing to be able to do on the fly I think.
In other words cognitively intensive. Not for the cognitively impaired.
